Verbalmente y por escrito, el Departamento de Estado de Estados Unidos confirmó a la familia del matemático estadounidense Boris Weisfeiler que el Presidente George Bush abordó el tema de su desaparición durante la reunión que sostuvo con el Presidente Ricardo Lagos en Washington el 19 de julio pasado.
Funcionarios de gobierno aseguraron a la familia Weisfeiler que la Casa Blanca “continuará tratando este tema con el gobierno de Chile, tanto en Santiago como en Washington”.
Semanas antes de la reunión de los dos Jefes de Estado, Olga Weisfeiler escribió al Presidente Bush solicitándole que tratara la desaparición de su hermano en la agenda de conversación. También pidió el apoyo de dos congresistas de su estado para transmitirle el mismo mensaje. Y así lo hicieron.
El senador Edward Kennedy escribió al Secretario de Estado Colin Powell, solicitando que se le recomendara a Bush abordar el tema de Weisfeiler con Lagos. “He estado en contacto con el Departamento de Estado frecuentemente sobre este tema, pidiendo que se tomen acciones para resolver este caso [...] Podría hacer mucha diferencia que el Presidente Lagos escuchara de parte del Presidente Bush que nuestro país está muy interesado en resolverlo,” señaló Kennedy.
Poco después de su viaje a Washington, Lagos pidió al Ministerio del Interior un informe sobre Weisfeiler y Colonia Dignidad. Fuentes de ese ministerio involucradas en el tema aseguraron no tener conocimiento sobre la petición presidencial, “pero eso no significa que no se haya hecho.”

Verbally and in writing, the Department of State of the United States confirmed to the family of the American mathematician Boris Weisfeiler that President George Bush approached the subject of disappearance during the meeting that he had with President Ricardo Lagos in Washington on July19.
Civilian employees of government assured the Weisfeiler family that the White House "will continue dealing with this subject with the government of Chile, as much in Santiago as in Washington".
Weeks before the meeting of both Chiefs of State, Olga Weisfeiler wrote to President Bush soliciting from him that he would deal with the disappearance of her brother in the conversation agenda. Also she requested the support of two congressmen of her state to transmit the same message to President. And thus they did it.
Senator Edward Kennedy wrote to the Secretary of State Colin Powell, soliciting a recommendation to Bush to approach the subject of Weisfeiler with Lagos. "I have been in contact with the Department of State frequently on this subject, requesting that actions are taken to solve this case [... ] It could make a difference that the President Lagos heard from President Bush that our country is very interested in solving it," indicated Kennedy.
Shortly after his trip to Washington, Lagos requested from the Department of the Interior a report on Weisfeiler and Colonia Dignidad. Sources in the ministry involved in the subject insisted they have no knowledge of the presidential request, "but that does not mean that it did not happen."
